An Economic Assessment of the Feasibility of Building Oil and Gas Pipelines from Iran to China, Utilizing Afghanistan as a Transit Route

International institutions' forecasts regarding China's demand for oil and gas indicate a significant increase in the coming years and a greater need for this emerging economic power in the coming decades. In recent years, this country has adopted a strategy of maximum diversification of import sources of energy and is trying to enhance its energy security through maximum diversification. On the other hand, the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its rich hydrocarbon energy resources and unique geographical location, seeks to increase its exports and diversify its methods of exporting oil and gas. This research evaluates the economic feasibility of proposed oil and gas pipelines from Afghanistan to China. The calculation of the net present value and internal rate of return shows that the proposed pipelines are economically justified and will result in a significant profit margin.
